To get away from commitments and from the city’s crowded streets to immerse yourself in the Tuscan countryside and enjoy some casual moments between games, walks and hunting grounds … The reasons which urged Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, on building the beautiful residence of Cerreto Guidi do not look very different from those that still lead thousands of tourists in our territory today!
The first important intervention to turn this part of the Florentine countryside into a holiday resort was, in 1556, the construction of the monumental Villa Medicea of Cerreto Guidi, which still dominates the historic center of Cerreto Guidi with its scenic access ramps called ” Medicean Bridges “attributed to Bernardo Buontalenti.
The villa, exploited as a base for hunting parties around the surrounding hills, in the Padule of Fucecchio and in the woods of Montalbano, today hosts the Historical Hunting and Territory Museum, which, taking into account the original vocation of this residence , Exhibits a rich collection of hunting weapons and Medicis’ portraits.
Despite the presence of the Museum and the beauty of the building, the villa own its fame to a sad story of love and death: on July 15, 1576, Isabella de’Medici mysteriously died in these rooms. Cosimo I’s beloved daughter and married to nobleman Paolo Giordano Orsini, the young woman of great beauty and culture was known as the star of the Medicis’ house. Tradition wants tha , suspected of adultery, she was choked by her husband in her bed (still visible inside her room in the villa). A new historical research tells us a different story, one of great love and passion with Paolo Giordano and, in all likelihood, of a natural death for a stroke.
However, in July, Cerreto recalls its history and the magnificence of the Renaissance during Isabella’s night, which between July 1 and July 2 will turn the center of the town into a Renaissance court where, along with musicians, jugglers and costume characters we can wait for the arrival of young Isabella and her court.
Waiting for Isabella’s night, on June 18, do not miss the traditional Infiorata of Corpus Domini that will color the streets of Cerreto Guidi and the nearby Fucecchio with thousands of flower petals. A truly extraordinary show!
Cerreto Guidi and Fucecchio
During Corpus Domini’s holidays, Cerreto Guidi and Fucecchio host a great show of colors and perfumes created by experienced masters starting from the evening of June 17th.
A fascinating event that involves the entire town center, where the arrival at Cerreto Guidi of Isabella is recalled, with a Renaissance celebration animated by costume shows, typical dishes and court games.
