Monterappoli

vigneti-MonterappoliThis medieval castle is located between Empoli and Castelfiorentino, along the via Salaiola which for centuries has seen the transport of rock-salt from Volterra towards the Magazzino del Sale di Empoli, not far from the Via Francigena. Today it is a hill top town from where the splendid Tuscan countryside can be admired.

The Pieve di San Giovanni Evangelista is well worth a visit, dating from the XII Century it is built entirely in the Romanesque style of Lombardy and was used as a model for the construction of the nearby churches of Saints Hippolytus and Biagio and of Saints Lorenzo and Leonardo in Castelfiorentino.
